This capture shows the terrain assaulted by Federal forces under command of General Joe Hooker in the early stages of the Battles for Chattanooga, Tennessee. Union troops were ordered to storm the foreboding heights of Lookout Mountain in what would become known as the 'Battle Above the Clouds." The assault was a successful one, driving Confederate forces from Lookout Mountain, whereafter they regrouped on nearby Missionary Ridge. The city of Chattanooga stretches beyond the plateau just below the summit of the mountain.
